Hidden in Plain Sight: Autism in Women Across the Lifespan
Autism in women is frequently under-recognized, misunderstood, and misdiagnosed due to longstanding diagnostic frameworks rooted in male-centric research and patriarchal norms. This three-hour training explores how Autism Spectrum Disorder often presents differently in women across the lifespan, including childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later life transitions such as perimenopause. Participants will examine how masking, coping strategies, socialization, and societal expectations contribute to delayed or missed diagnoses, and how these patterns impact mental health outcomes.
This workshop will take a neuro-affirming and culturally responsive approach to understanding autism in women, addressing common misdiagnoses, ethical considerations in referral for assessment, and the limitations of the DSM-5-TR. Special attention will be given to the role of patriarchy, gender norms, and systemic bias in shaping symptom presentation and clinical interpretation. Clinicians will leave with practical tools to identify autistic traits more accurately, reduce harm, and support clients with greater clarity, validation, and ethical care.
Objectives:
-
Identify key differences in how autism commonly presents in women across the lifespan, including childhood, adulthood, and later life transitions such as perimenopause.
-
Explain how masking, coping strategies, and social conditioning influence symptom presentation and contribute to delayed or missed diagnoses in women.
-
Critically evaluate the limitations of the DSM-5-TR, including how male-centric research and diagnostic criteria impact the identification of autism in women.
-
Recognize common misdiagnoses associated with autistic women (e.g., anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, trauma-related diagnoses) and understand their clinical and ethical implications.
-
Apply ethical, neuro-affirming referral practices for autism assessment, including how to discuss testing with clients and collaborate appropriately with evaluators.

When Motherhood Is Neurodivergent with Dr. Nancy Grechko & Nicolle Wargo- Boswell
Motherhood can amplify both the strengths and challenges of neurodivergence, particularly for individuals with ADHD and AuDHD. This four-hour training explores how neurodivergent traits intersect with parenting demands, household management, emotional labor, and relational dynamics. Drawing from both clinical expertise and lived experience, presenters will examine how symptoms of ADHD and AuDHD uniquely impact mothers across different stages of parenting.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how executive functioning differences, sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation, masking, and chronic overwhelm show up in family systems, romantic partnerships, and parent–child relationships. This workshop will take a neuro-affirming, non-pathologizing approach, addressing systemic pressures, gendered expectations, and internalized shame often experienced by neurodivergent mothers. Clinicians will leave with practical insights to better support clients in therapy, reduce misinterpretation of symptoms, and foster sustainable, compassionate care plans for neurodivergent families.
Objectives:
-
Describe core ADHD and AuDHD traits and how these presentations commonly shift or intensify during motherhood.
-
Identify how neurodivergent symptoms impact daily parenting tasks, including household management, routines, decision-making, and emotional labor.
-
Explain the relational impact of neurodivergence on partnerships, co-parenting dynamics, and parent–child relationships.
-
Recognize common clinical themes in neurodivergent mothers, including burnout, shame, sensory overload, masking, and chronic overwhelm.
-
Apply neuro-affirming therapeutic strategies to support neurodivergent mothers without reinforcing pathologizing or deficit-based narratives.
-
Assess the role of societal and gender-based expectations in shaping distress, self-concept, and treatment outcomes for neurodivergent mothers.
