Beyond the Basics: Mastering the Business of Therapy

Take your practice to the next level! This advanced workshop is designed for therapists who have already laid the groundwork for private practice and are ready to deepen their knowledge. Building on the fundamentals, we’ll dive into the real-world skills needed to thrive as a business owner—from handling subpoenas and mastering assessments, to navigating insurance paneling, managing income and expenses, creating sustainable systems, and expanding your income beyond the therapy room. Whether you’re seeking confidence, clarity, or new strategies, this training will give you the tools to grow a successful, sustainable practice.

Objectives

  • Identify advanced legal and ethical considerations relevant to private practice, including how to appropriately respond to subpoenas and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Demonstrate understanding of assessment use in private practice to establish medical necessity, support treatment planning, and meet insurance requirements.

  • Differentiate between private pay and insurance-based practice models, and outline the steps and strategies for credentialing and successful panel participation.

  • Apply business management strategies to track income, expenses, and plan for sustainability, including managing multiple revenue streams.

  • Evaluate opportunities for practice growth beyond talk therapy, such as consultation, workshops, or other income-generating avenues.

  • Implement systems and workflows that support neurodivergent-friendly (any brain, really), efficient, and sustainable business practices.

Payment Policy & Practice: Understanding PA 25-97 for Mental Health Practitioners in CT

This 1-hour Morning Mastery CE workshop equips Connecticut mental health practitioners with essential knowledge and practical tools to comply with Public Act 25-97, Section 4, effective October 1, 2025. The session will demystify the new statutory prohibition on requiring patients to leave electronic payment information on file as a condition of care - a change that affects intake procedures, billing workflows, and consent practices. Attendees will learn what the law says, why it matters for ethical and legal practice, and how to revise policies and documentation to support both client access and clinic operations. Attendees will also receive a template to use in their practice that is in compliance with this change.

Objectives:

  • Explain the requirements of PA 25-97, Section 4 (effective October 1, 2025). Specifically, health care providers cannot require patients to provide or keep electronic payment information on file as a condition of receiving care, and that violations can be treated as unfair trade practices under Connecticut law.

  • Identify practical implications for mental health practices, including how to update intake forms, policy language, and consent statements to align with the law while maintaining effective revenue cycle processes.

  • Develop compliance strategies and documentation workflows that protect both patient access to care and the practice’s financial health without violating the new statutory prohibition.

  • Articulate potential risks and enforcement mechanisms associated with non-compliance, including how violations are addressed under the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA).
