I debated whether or not to share this - then figured why the hell not? There’s no shame in sharing this experience, because I can’t be the only one out there ☺️

But when you have a neurospicy brain - some holidays just hit different! 🎃🦃🎄

Meaning, sights, smells, noises, textures, socializing…depending on the day and where my nervous system is at, I know I’ll react differently. As will the rest of my household!

Then you throw a child into the mix, who also happens to have a neurospicy brain as well (thanks genetics!) and it amplifies it all!

So how do we work with our brain and body rather than against them? We reduce expectations! We don’t spend a ton of time out socializing, in this case trick or treating, especially if the brain and body aren’t there to do it. If part of a costume comes off, that’s ok, we simply move on. We have many hands on deck (thank you grandparents!!) to help with support. Oh, and we constantly direct body cues (potty time, hunger, nap/decompressing).

Sure - our household isn’t typical. But that’s ok, because we set it up to be neuro-affirming and soothing to various neurotypes and nervous systems.

So if you’re holidays or family traditions look a bit different to those around you - just know you’re not alone 💙 You’re doing what’s best for your family and best of all: you’re working WITH your brain and body ✨

We don’t spend a ton of time out socializing, in this case trick or treating, especially if the brain and body aren’t there to do it. If part of a costume comes off, that’s ok, we simply move on. We have many hands on deck (thank you grandparents!!) to help with support. Oh, and we constantly direct body cues (potty time, hunger, nap/decompressing).

Sure - our household isn’t typical. But that’s ok, because we set it up to be neuro-affirming and soothing to various neurotypes and nervous systems.

So if you’re holidays or family traditions look a bit different to those around you - just know you’re not alone 💙 You’re doing what’s best for your family and best of all: you’re working WITH your brain and body ✨

Going through paperwork, and situating my space before today’s workshop…and I stumble across this.

I haven’t seen it in years and to be honest, I didn’t know what happened to it. But there was a time I was awarded Senior Speaker and gave the final sermon in Chapel at my Christian University, the week before graduation. And I find it on the day I’m presenting A Deep Dive into Religious Trauma.

I used to think Nicolle of 2012 would be incredibly disappointed in the work I was doing now, but to be honest…I think that’s false. You see Nicolle of 2012 was still a fierce advocate of human rights, social justice and really loved people. And all of that holds true today, it just looks a bit different these days.

I’ve learned I can love people outside of a church, religion and without the constant need to evangelize. I’ve learned and accepted that there are alternate forms of healing outside the Spirit, and the peace I get from that is unfathomable.

This is my journey, my story, my way of living I choose to participate in…and that’s ok.

So, whether your a therapist looking to dabble more in the of realm of the Religious Trauma space, or a Survivor yourself, I can’t recommend this book enough!
