Yesterday I had the incredible privilege of presenting “When Faith Breaks: The Grief No One Talks About” at the @ctamft Conference.

Sharing space with a room full of therapists who showed up with open hearts and a genuine desire to create safer spaces for clients navigating religious trauma, faith deconstruction, and the grief that so often goes unseen was truly something special. 🫶

One of the most meaningful moments was our closing intervention. Together, we wrote down intentions, watched them dissolve in water, and carried that water outside - returning those intentions to the world. Witnessing a room full of clinicians pause, reflect, and hold both grief and hope together was incredibly powerful!!

I also loved sitting in on other presentations and learning from so many brilliant clinicians. Conferences like these remind me that we all have something to teach, and we all have something to learn.

I’m leaving with new ideas, a full heart, and so much gratitude 🙏

To everyone who attended my session, asked thoughtful questions, trusted the process, and continues creating spaces where people can safely grieve, question, reconstruct, and heal…thank you. 🤍

Years ago, I started listening to @mumfordandsons around the same time my faith, identity, and understanding of the world began to unravel. Their music became the soundtrack to parts of my deconstruction, and eventually my reconstruction.

What surprised me wasn’t the nostalgia.

It was how familiar the experience felt…

The collective singing.
The shared emotion.
The sense of wonder.
The feeling of being connected to something larger than myself.

For a moment, old and new versions of me collided:

The former pastor.
The therapist.
The girl who once had all the answers.
The woman who has learned to live with questions.

And somehow, standing in the rain, all of them belonged there.

One of the greatest gifts of reconstruction has been discovering that sacred experiences can still exist - sometimes in places you never expected to find them.

Welcome to my basement. 📚✨

Lately I’ve been on a mission to organize, declutter, and let go of things that no longer serve us. One project I’ve been avoiding for a long time? My books.

As a millennial, I was DEEP in my Twilight/vampire era. The kind of deep where you’re standing in line at midnight waiting for a book release. 🧛‍♀️🌙

Then I went to a private Christian university and began my journey toward becoming a pastor. Somewhere along the way, I was taught that some of the books I loved weren’t “fruitful” and should be let go.

So I did.

And honestly?? It never sat right with me.

Over time, my shelves shifted to historical Christian romance and other books that felt more “acceptable.” But today, as I sorted through them, I realized something: I’ve finally reached a place where I can let many of those go, too.

Not because there’s anything wrong with them.

But because someone else might love them. Someone else might be excited to discover them. Someone else might find comfort, joy, escape, or inspiration in their pages.

And maybe the most healing part of all is knowing that she doesn’t need anyone else’s permission to enjoy what she enjoys. 💛

And then, while I’m standing there in the middle of this weirdly emotional book-sorting moment, @noahkahanmusic The Great Divide comes on my playlist.

Then I went to a private Christian university and began my journey toward becoming a pastor. Somewhere along the way, I was taught that some of the books I loved weren’t “fruitful” and should be let go.

So I did.

And honestly?? It never sat right with me.

Over time, my shelves shifted to historical Christian romance and other books that felt more “acceptable.” But today, as I sorted through them, I realized something: I’ve finally reached a place where I can let many of those go, too.

Not because there’s anything wrong with them.

But because someone else might love them. Someone else might be excited to discover them. Someone else might find comfort, joy, escape, or inspiration in their pages.

And maybe the most healing part of all is knowing that she doesn’t need anyone else’s permission to enjoy what she enjoys. 💛

And then, while I’m standing there in the middle of this weirdly emotional book-sorting moment, @noahkahanmusic The Great Divide comes on my playlist.

The crossover between being neurodivergent and having a history of religious trauma. ✨

Today I found myself sitting in my own office…with brightly colored hair 🌈, a nose ring 💍, and my shoulders showing - and suddenly feeling like I was going to get in trouble. 😳

Not because anyone said anything.

Not because I was actually doing anything wrong.

But because there was a time in my life when these were things I wasn’t allowed to do.

Back then, I learned that my body, appearance, and choices could become someone else’s concern. That there were rules (spoken and unspoken) about what was “appropriate,” what caused men to “stumble,” and what a good woman should look like.

And even now, years later, the rejection sensitivity can still sneak up on me. 🫠

The funny thing is that I’m a grown woman. In a business I own. Making my own rules. 💁‍♀️✨

Yet sometimes my nervous system doesn’t realize we’ve already left the room. 🧠💛

Deconstruction isn’t a one-time event.

Reconstruction isn’t either. 🏗️

Sometimes healing looks like noticing the old fear when it appears, thanking it for trying to protect you, and continuing to wear the nose ring anyway. 💜

What surprises me most isn’t that these moments still happen.

It’s how long they’ll stay quiet before popping up and reminding me they’re still there. 👀

POV: a song from your past suddenly finds its way back into your present…and your nervous system remembers before your brain catches up. 🥺🎶

I honestly didn’t plan on recording my reaction to the re-release of “Testify to Love,” but there was something so surreal and emotional about hearing it again after all these years. The intersection of past and present can feel wildly visceral - especially when music, faith, memories, identity, and healing all collide at once. 🤍

As someone who specializes in religious trauma and harm, I wanted to share this because reactions like this are NORMAL. Your body can hold emotion, grief, comfort, confusion, nostalgia, safety, pain… sometimes all at the same time. A song, smell, place, or phrase can instantly reconnect us to older versions of ourselves.

And healing doesn’t always mean “no reaction.” Sometimes healing looks like being able to notice the reaction with compassion instead of shame. 🫶

So yes… even therapists have moments where the body says “oh, we remember this.” 🫶

Sometimes they’re:

• disconnected from the modality
• needing a different pace
