I debated whether or not to share this - then figured why the hell not? There’s no shame in sharing this experience, because I can’t be the only one out there ☺️

But when you have a neurospicy brain - some holidays just hit different! 🎃🦃🎄

Meaning, sights, smells, noises, textures, socializing…depending on the day and where my nervous system is at, I know I’ll react differently. As will the rest of my household!

Then you throw a child into the mix, who also happens to have a neurospicy brain as well (thanks genetics!) and it amplifies it all!

So how do we work with our brain and body rather than against them? We reduce expectations! We don’t spend a ton of time out socializing, in this case trick or treating, especially if the brain and body aren’t there to do it. If part of a costume comes off, that’s ok, we simply move on. We have many hands on deck (thank you grandparents!!) to help with support. Oh, and we constantly direct body cues (potty time, hunger, nap/decompressing).

Sure - our household isn’t typical. But that’s ok, because we set it up to be neuro-affirming and soothing to various neurotypes and nervous systems.

So if you’re holidays or family traditions look a bit different to those around you - just know you’re not alone 💙 You’re doing what’s best for your family and best of all: you’re working WITH your brain and body ✨

When you’re neurodivergent, nervous system regulation is a top priority! …Especially when you have important duties as Matron of Honor and mommy to the cutest flower girl 🌹🌻

Why?? Because my reactivity, and ability to regulate shouldn’t come in the way of having a great time, celebrating with family and friends!

This is just another reason why I love this so much - and I’m so up front about doing this WITH my family! I wouldn’t be doing this with folks in my life that I love and cared about if I thought it didn’t work or was harmful.

It’s days like this where I love to reflect on everything that’s brought me up to this point in my life. Sometimes I forget what life was like before owning my practice (ie - white-knuckling it through each day).

But maybe because it’s Friday, and I GET to do a workshop…or because I did LENS this morning and just have the capacity to hold and process more 🫶

Nevertheless - where over you find yourself at the end of this week, I hope it brings you some joy, reassurance or possibly peace that you survived another one.

Going through paperwork, and situating my space before today’s workshop…and I stumble across this.

I haven’t seen it in years and to be honest, I didn’t know what happened to it. But there was a time I was awarded Senior Speaker and gave the final sermon in Chapel at my Christian University, the week before graduation. And I find it on the day I’m presenting A Deep Dive into Religious Trauma.

I used to think Nicolle of 2012 would be incredibly disappointed in the work I was doing now, but to be honest…I think that’s false. You see Nicolle of 2012 was still a fierce advocate of human rights, social justice and really loved people. And all of that holds true today, it just looks a bit different these days.

I’ve learned I can love people outside of a church, religion and without the constant need to evangelize. I’ve learned and accepted that there are alternate forms of healing outside the Spirit, and the peace I get from that is unfathomable.

This is my journey, my story, my way of living I choose to participate in…and that’s ok.

When it comes to working with any scope of trauma, I think the majority of us in the field would agree that daily reminders and practices of safety and security are a must!

These can be sprinkled throughout your day - they don’t need to be “formal” coping skills, but they can be!

For example - I have a workshop on Purity Culture next Friday (insert my shameless plug here ✌️). And with this, it’s had me re-process my own Religious Trauma…again. But rather than look at it as trying to climb a mountain of emotions; instead I gently remind myself of the safety and security I currently have, and use varying methods that work for me to regulate my body!

A big one for me this week - was finding my own Purity Ring. I asked for it during a time in my life where I was deeply embedded in high control religion. Finding it brought back a lot of memories…but it also brought so many reminders. For instance, how I’m still on this Earth, and well - not damned, cursed or broken goods.

So what am I going to do to continue regulating? As I finalize my workshop, I’m going to have that ring with me - I’m going to use it as a source of MY power and remind me that at the end of the day I am safe. Oh, and you bet I’ll have it with me when I present next week - because my belief system is no longer rooted in fear, and I’m a survivor of Purity Culture 🫶

- I have a neuro-spicy brain myself, and spent almost all of 2024 learning to embrace it 🫶
- When I’m not in my office or working, you can usually find me at home, in my hobbit hole, being my happy introverted self 🏡
- Speaking of Hobbit holes - I have several fandoms, they all take claims to parts of my personality (and I’m not sorry about it 🙃) 🦄🧚✨🪄🧙‍♂️
- So, you’re probably not surprised by this next bit: I LOVE reading 📚 I’m always ready at least 3-5 books at once!
- I’m a tried-and-true Swiftie (been here since Debut friends 💙
- I have 1 human child, 2 fur children and 1 human husband 🍼🐾🐾 🤦‍♂️
- Finally, before becoming a therapist I lived MANY lives: Pastor, Preacher, Missionary, Student, Fraud Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Teacher…I could go on, it’s wild really! But I’m forever thankful to the Universe and any/all higher powers that helped to guide my path, helping me to find this career. Because I really can’t fathom how I was ever able to do anything else!

While I can confidently say that 2024 was by far the most difficult: mentally, emotionally, physically, relationally, and even professionally than I have ever experienced in my life. I’m making the choice to shift my focus on what I was capable of doing this past year. What was I able to do? What did I have the privilege of being able to participate in?

This my way of radically accepting all that I’ve come to associate with this year, and help shift my focus on to what I have control over right now, and how that can help make an impact for 2025.

So, here are the things I had the privilege of doing in 2024:

- Started to actually feel like I was falling into steps of being a mom…though, I must admit this is a never ending battle, but I’ve at least come to accept it 🙏
- Started a business consulting group for therapists in private practice 🛋️
- Let my love of fresh florals and plants flourish 💐
- Went back to seeing people in person, at my new office 📝
- Learned how to make sourdough bread 🍞
- Finally got my neuro-spicy brain diagnosis, and allowed myself to unmask for the first time in my life 🙈
- Gave my first workshop with GTC 📚
- Unabashedly let my love for all things T Swift soar 🫶
- Went on first family vacation 🏡
- Went to the networking events 👯‍♀️
- Started LENS 🧠
- Spent time with family 🎄

In the midst of fear, worry, or even grief we can be at our most vulnerable. You know what I’m talking about - those moments where it feels like the foundation of your life is crumbling, where every corner you turn, you can’t help but ask yourself: What next? How can it get any worse?

Like my boys Frodo and Sam (yes…I went there!) - here they are, just trying to save Middle-earth, but everything that could go wrong does go wrong on that journey ✨

But if you’ve seen the films, or read the books, you know our beloved hero Sam brings a sense of hope with his speech. He reminds Frodo of all the good that still remains, even amongst the vast amount of darkness present. He reminds Frodo that even though their Shire, their home, though small is still important enough to have hope for! Hope that it will exist, that will continue, that will thrive!

Social media is a funny thing, right? It helps us stay in touch with people we’ve crossed paths with, assists with communication and keeping us “in the know,”allows us to give people small glimpses into our lives! I mean, how cool is that?! But at the same time, it can really make us question ourselves. In other words - by looking at the pictures of those we follow, we can often find ourselves second guessing what we do, our interests, how we think, what we wear…and even down to all the tools we even use in our home! Talk about wild 😜

Here’s a gentle reminder that everything you see online is just a snapshot of someone’s life - it’s the parts that someone wanted you to see. Parts they allow a glimpse of. Typically, we don’t see the “bad” - who wants to show that? That’s boring, that’s no fun!

So, my challenge to you is to romanticize what’s already around you. Like this picture of Freya - I could totally write a flowery, poetic post about the day I bought those curtains and how I had never dreamed that one day my own baby girl would be just playing with them. What you don’t see? What I wouldn’t post?? The hot mess express that was my house that day, or the dumpster fire of a nervous system I had. But I’m here to tell you - take it all in with a grain of salt, and remember you’re not always seeing the full picture 💛
